It’s one poll but…

It’s one poll but…

The usual caveats apply, this is one poll but Starmer will take these polling improvements. My expectation is that if other polls show something similar it will not last once domestic reality such as the cost of living and the wider economy come back to the fore for the electorate. TSE

Something to track over the next few weeks

Something to track over the next few weeks

Like most I am sceptical that foreign affairs will win (or lose) the next election for Labour but it may well improve Sir Keir Starmer’s very dire personal ratings which normally presages an improvement in this party’s voting intention. I do expect Sir Keir Starmer’s best PM ratings to improve a lot too but the Tories dealt well with the wider invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and they were still walloped at last year’s election. I wonder if Sir Keir…

Yesterday, February 28, 2025, a date which will live in infamy

Yesterday, February 28, 2025, a date which will live in infamy

Yesterday’s disgrace in the Oval Office literally left me shaking with anger, Robert Jenrick summed it up accurately and full marks to him for his lack of equivocation. The second Trump presidency has in in less than six weeks destroyed alliances and assumptions that have brought peace and stability to the world for eighty years and historians will cite yesterday as a day of infamy. I have one questions for readers of this website, if Donald Trump was a Russian…

I can’t remember how to write 1, 1000, 51, 6, and 500 in Roman numerals, I M LIVID

This polling reminds me of an observation by a politician that you really cannot trust the public as the public vastly overestimate their understanding of things. As somebody who loves using Roman numerals I find this polling but hilarious and sad at the same time. I think there is a clear correlation with people perceiving understanding Roman numerals as a sign of strong intellect so think they are cleverer than they actually are. I think LXXXII per cent of people…

Starmer’s best day as PM but there’s always a Tweet

Starmer’s best day as PM but there’s always a Tweet

It’s a low bar but yesterday was Sir Keir Starmer’s best day as Prime Minister but long term there’s a risk for Starmer that he gets damaged standing too close to Trump given the Ayrshire hotelier’s ratings in the UK. That Starmer Tweet from 2019 will be ruthlessly exploited by the Lib Dems, Greens, and the SNP which again presents problems for Starmer. TSE

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times

I find it intriguing that whilst the government’s ratings have improved somewhat, admittedly from dire to appalling, Rachel Reeves has seen the opposite happen. I wonder if soon Starmer may have to sack her to save his government if this polling isn’t a one off and she starts polling much worse than the government. TSE

A Letter To The New German Chancellor

A Letter To The New German Chancellor

Dear Herr Merz, President Trump is about to impose swingeing tariffs with the goal of reducing the US’s bilateral trade deficit with Germany and the EU. And I know, the temptation is to respond in kind, and demonstrate that you have agency. Don’t. It is stupid and counter-productive, and the impact on European and German voters would be severe. Instead, I would like to suggest an alternative approach: do absolutely nothing. Why? Well, three reasons. Firstly, the impact on US demand for European…
