The methods used by the big unions to get Ed Milliband elected in 2010 are why he has to stand up to UNITE now

The row over the Falkirk selection could make or break him Mail packs, such as the one featured above from the GMB union to those of its members entitled to vote in Labour’s leadership election, played a pivotal role in EdM’s victory September 2010. They were developed for the GMB, UNISON and UNITE unions to get round a Labour party ban on candidates’ promotional materials being included in the voting packs for the election. Instead the ballot papers were nested…

Who would take over as Labour Leader if Ed fell short?

Who would take over as Labour Leader if Ed fell short?

I expect Labour to win most seats at the next general election and for Ed Miliband to be Prime Minister. The bookies make it the most likely event but not a certainty. They price it as a 1/2 shot that Labour will return the most MPs at the next election and 4/6 that Ed Miliband makes it to 10 Downing Street. This is not a universal view by any stretch of the imagination. So what happens if Labour falls…

Is one Ed better than two?

Is one Ed better than two?

Over the last few days, several newspapers have had articles mentioning disharmony between Eds Miliband and Balls. The Guardian observed  the Labour leader, who promoted Balls to the post of shadow chancellor against his better instincts after the surprise resignation of Alan Johnson, is finding him hard work and secretive. The Times noted that Ed Miliband saw at first hand the worst of the disputes between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, and is unlikely to make the mistake of  Tony…

ICM Polling in the Guardian VI added

The Guardian has published an excerpt of their monthly ICM poll. On the net satisfaction ratings, David Cameron still leads Ed Miliband minus 12 to minus 13. Nick Clegg’s net satisfaction rating is minus 26. The Guardian notes Balls…

On the 5th Anniversary of Blair’s exit from No. 10……

Would Labour still be in power if they’d stuck with Tony? Exactly five years ago today, June 27th 2007, was a pivotal point in British politics. It was the moment when the triple general election winner Tony Blair stood down and when Gordon Brown took over after Labour MPs had given him the job without a contest. Blair, of course, was one of only three leaders in Labour’s entire history to lead the party to overall majorities The clip featured…

Could Dave’s women problem boost Yvette’s chances?

Could Dave’s women problem boost Yvette’s chances?

Is now the moment for a female Labour leader? There are two big trends being featured in almost all of the polling: Firstly that Ed Miliband’s personal ratings remain dreadful and it’s hard to see how, given the importance of leaders in determining election outcomes, that his party could win with him at the helm. At the same time Cameron and the Tories continue to have problems appealing to women voters. In both the leader ratings and voter intention almost…

Miliband’s net ratings tumble 15 points

Miliband’s net ratings tumble 15 points

Why such a sharp drop in just two days? The weekly YouGov leadership ratings are out behind the paywall at the Sunday Times and show a sharp drop on polling earlier in the week. Today’s numbers have 28% saying he’s doing his job as Labour leader “well” compared with 60% who say he’s doing it badly. That makes a net minus of 32 points, just one point off his worst figure ever in June. David Cameron, meanwhile, is on 43%…

What’s Harriet done for future leadership contests?

What’s Harriet done for future leadership contests?

How will the 1+ woman rule work in practice? One of the more significant events to have taken place at Labour’s recent conference was its adoption of the Refounding Labour proposals. Amongst these were the scrapping of Shadow Cabinet elections and the introduction of a rule that at least one of Labour’s leader and deputy must be a woman, championed by its current deputy, Harriet Harman. I’ve not been able to find the precise wording of how this would actually…
