The most depressing polling response I can recall

The most depressing polling response I can recall

I’ve never been more disheartened by a response to a poll than this poll. I think the GOP are becoming aware of the fact that they’ve only won the popular vote once in the last eight presidential elections. I try to use the word fascism sparingly but this is where the party of Lincoln is headed, but like many despots the GOP want to suppress their political opponents from challenging them. A confident party would want to focus on popular…

David Cameron: Liberal Democrat Slayer

David Cameron: Liberal Democrat Slayer

For those of us who were Conservative activists in the 1990s and the early 2000s we were often in awe of the Liberal Democrat campaigning efforts. The Liberal Democrat activists would enter an area, secure a foothold on the local council, eventually take control of the council, and in plenty of these areas take the parliamentary seat shortly thereafter. Newbury, Christchurch, Eastleigh, Winchester, and Romsey are seared on the minds of so many. It is one of the reasons the…

Sending best wishes to PBer JohnO

Sending best wishes to PBer JohnO

I’m sure PBers will join me in sending our best wishes to JohnO who suffered a cardiac arrest earlier on this month, Esher and Walton Conservatives said last week. Local Conservatives are thankful for all the goodwill messages we received for our colleague County Cllr John O’Reilly after he suffered a cardiac arrest last week. We are pleased to report that John is now making a good recovery in hospital. On Sunday 9 May, only three days after John was re-elected as…

A fascinating insight into the psyche of Britons

A fascinating insight into the psyche of Britons

I’ve been looking forward to seeing this poll ever since I saw the YouGov polled what animals Americans they think could beat in a fight. The 2/3 per cent of respondents who think they could beat a crocodile, grizzly bear, elephant, or lion remind me of the anecdote that in a survey several years ago 2% of respondents who replied yes to the question ‘Have you ever been decapitated?’ As for the 66% who think they could beat a cat…

The King of the North succeeding Starmer? More like The King of Wishful Thinking

The King of the North succeeding Starmer? More like The King of Wishful Thinking

At the time of writing Andy Burnham is the 4/1 favourite to succeed Sir Keir Starmer as Labour leader, he clearly wants the job, last night in an interview with The Observer he said ‘Labour’s red wall seats would have been safer under me [Andy Burnham]’ and ‘he would run for the leadership again after the next general election if he had widespread support’. He’s clearly on manoeuvres but I think he’s someone you shouldn’t be backing but laying in…

I agree with Shadsy

I agree with Shadsy

I have to agree with Matthew Shaddick of Ladbrokes about moving the counts at the general election to 9am on the Friday. On administrative level it seems like a good idea as it would mean the counters aren’t pulling all nighters but are counting after a good night’s sleep. I postulate that it would make for a better environment for political gamblers to bet after a decent night’s sleep rather than pulling an all nighter. The fact we’d have a…

These elections remind us that leader ratings and supplementaries are a better predictor of electoral outcomes than voting intention

These elections remind us that leader ratings and supplementaries are a better predictor of electoral outcomes than voting intention

Regular readers of this website know that Mike Smithson and myself really value the various leader ratings and supplementaries as they are often a better pointer to election outcomes and these recent elections are further proof of that. Based on the tweets atop this thread I wrote a piece in March saying that Mark Drakeford’s Labour party were in a much better position than the voting intention figures suggested thanks to the munificent leadership of Mark Drakeford, it is clear…
