Apathy in the UK

Apathy in the UK

Just one in 1 in 5 Brits would be upset if Northern Ireland left the UK which should really alarm Unionists in Northern Ireland. I’m not surprised by this polling, back in 2019 YouGov found members of the Conservative and UNIONIST Party, radicalised by Brexit, were prepared to destroy the Union to get their precious Brexit. Theoretically these members should be the most pro-Union people in the country. Unlike Scotland, the benchmark for a plebiscite in Northern Ireland is on…

The new shy Tories?

The new shy Tories?

This is fascinating, the write up in The Times says Polling for The Times shows that almost a third of all voters either don’t know how they will cast their ballot or say they won’t vote at all. It shows that if an election were to be held tomorrow — and the option were available — “don’t know” would be the UK’s third largest party with 16 per cent of the vote — 2 per cent behind the Tories. Tory…

Have we seen peak SNP?

Have we seen peak SNP?

Today’s Sunday Times is reporting that The SNP is running out of cash following an exodus of 30,000 members and the unexpected legal costs linked to the continuing police investigation into the party’s funding, its ruling council has been told. Colin Beattie, the SNP treasurer, told the national executive committee (NEC) that the party was “having difficulty in balancing the books due to the reduction in membership and donors” and that fighting a potential by-election in Rutherglen & Hamilton West…

Tonight’s Opinium

Tonight’s Opinium

Tonight’s Opinium will be reassure Starmer and Labour, there was a fear that we could soon see a single digit Labour lead which would lead to some awkward conversations for Starmer. There’s been no terrible backlash for Starmer over those posters. The fifth tweet in this header beautifully sums up the shortness of the Liz Truss premiership. TSE

You never forget your first time

You never forget your first time

As a callow and innocent teenager I will alway remember April the 9th 1992 with a lot of fondness for it was the first general election I followed with a keen interest and actually stayed up all night to see the results come in. As a normal thirteen year old at the time I was very interested in politics, the (in)famous Sheffield rally took place in my home city, so you couldn’t avoid politics during the campaign if you lived…

There is nothing to Keir but Keir itself

There is nothing to Keir but Keir itself

Could Sunak’s net ratings soon outperform Starmer’s ratings? I feel like the ancient mariner reminding PBers of two things in particular, firstly that Jeremy Corbyn’s legacy to Sir Keir Starmer is that Starmer would need to make 124 net gains to win a majority of 2 and secondly leader net ratings are often a better predictor of electoral outcomes than standard voting intention polls. Recent events in Scotland has the potential to make Starmer’s task easier but this recent finding…

Labour’s useless strategy?

Labour’s useless strategy?

Earlier on this week The Times reported that Labour will target Humza Yousaf’s Glasgow Pollok seat with a message that he lives 80 miles from the constituency, in an attempt to undermine his election campaigning. Pollok is among the areas where Labour is delivering direct mail shots to try to capture voters who have previously backed the SNP as part of a campaign to exploit the divisive leadership election. Yousaf’s home is in Dundee and he must now spend much more time…

Storm(y) in a D cup for Donald Trump

Storm(y) in a D cup for Donald Trump

When it became apparent that Donald Trump was going to be indicted I predicted that this would simultaneously solidify Trump’s hold on the GOP nomination whilst weaken Trump’s chances of winning the Presidency next year. The first part of that prediction is coming true based on this YouGov poll. I had a hunch that GOP voters would see this as the greatest sham trial since Jesus was taken before Sanhedrin then Pontius Pilate which would boost Trump. I suspect the…
