The terrible truth about Brexit

The terrible truth about Brexit

Young lawyers are given eclectic reading recommendations. I think the idea is to broaden their minds and to make them more commercially aware. Or perhaps their mentors just think they should read more. Some of the suggested reading, regrettably, includes business management books. The least scientific and most cynical books tend to be most useful in practice. I have often drawn on the early chapters of Parkinson’s Law in meetings. Who Moved My Blackberry is a how-to manual for all too…

Monkey’s paw. Delivering on the referendum campaign promises

Monkey’s paw. Delivering on the referendum campaign promises

Voters overwhelmingly now remember only two arguments being made in favour of Brexit before the referendum: curb immigration & more money for the NHS. pic.twitter.com/6bmcd3Tvwk — Andrew Cooper (@AndrewCooper__) February 9, 2018 In the end, Theresa May has been more faithful to the referendum mandate than most Leave advocates. In 2016, the Leave campaign focussed on just two things: diverting the EU contributions into the NHS and scaring the public into believing that millions of Turks were poised to invade. It succeeded….

Corporeal on May and Corbyn’s approach to Brexit

Corporeal on May and Corbyn’s approach to Brexit

If you look at the front of forces on the march you tend to find one of three things. Leaders, figureheads, and cannon fodder, and British politics certainly hasn’t been suffering from an excess of leadership recently. Theresa May (still officially Prime Minister when I started writing this sentence) entered Downing Street after a leadership election which was more entertaining than inspiring and, having campaigned for Remain, took on the responsibility of delivering Brexit, whatever that means (two and a…

Taking stock. Brexit – just where are we and what are the options

Taking stock. Brexit – just where are we and what are the options

So a Shopping Centre on the Isle of Man just had their Christmas decorations done… ? pic.twitter.com/4s8MMsd9zn — Liam Rice (@li4miom) November 18, 2018 Christmas comes ever earlier each year. When I was a child, we didn’t hear anything about it until 1 December, when Radio 1 broke out the Christmas tracks. Contrast that with this year. Aldi launched their Christmas advert with Kevin the carrot on 9 November. John Lewis unveiled Elton John for their Christmas campaign on 15 November. And poor Theresa…

Betting on just how many candidates are on the first ballot paper of the next Tory leadership election

Betting on just how many candidates are on the first ballot paper of the next Tory leadership election

A mixture of ambition, ego, a low nomination threshold, and a very democratic voting system allows a lot of Tories to stand for leader. Since the current Tory leadership rules were first used in 2001 the highest number of candidates to be on the first ballot paper is five, in 2001 and 2016, so I can see why people may wish to back the 8/15 on there being fewer 7 candidates, however I think the value is betting on there…
