A rather subdued speech by TMay which did not have much substance

One thing’s for sure – she ain’t no Maggie Thatcher

The first speech by a newly elected leader is always a big occasion. Its a big platform that gets wide coverage where they can set of their vision and what they see as the way forward.

I liked the way she was happy to nick some Ed Miliband policies like an energy freeze and to repeatedly say they the Tories were the party of the working class. She also, in a reference to a speech years ago when she was party chairman, said that Labour was the “nasty party”.

But overall it felt very subdued. There was something lacking there and the response from the audience at the end was not as enthusiastic as you’d expect.

Of course everything is over-shadowed by BREXIT and the massive challenge that TMay has in making it work in a way that doesn’t damage the economy. There was little in the speech to add to our knowledge about the way forward.
