The real problem all along for both ministers and the police is that in the absence of any possible compromising of national security it was always going to be difficult to get the backing of the Crown Prosecution Service to support criminal proceedings. And if there is no crime then what was the point?

Just when I thought we were going into a quiet political period we have a development that might take us through to Christmas.
