Nicola, Queen of Scots

Nicola, Queen of Scots

The Scottish subsample from this week’s YouGov poll amused me immensely, obviously it is a sign that disillusionment with the SNP is such that people are now are moving over to a party that doesn’t even stand in Scotland subsamples of 143 are inherently unreliable and only people who don’t understand polling or betting rely on them. Researching the polling in Scotland, proper polls not subsamples, I noticed some things that really does deserve comment. The last time a party…

Boris should start Scottish independence negotiations now

Boris should start Scottish independence negotiations now

Unionists should learn the lessons of Brexit: vote on a deal, not a concept Goodbye separation trauma; hello separation trauma. After this week’s elections, Holyrood will again have a pro-Independence majority meaning the constitutional arguments of the last decade will not only continue but intensify. While the SNP look unlikely to win an overall majority, the Greens should see them over the line. Cue demands for a second referendum such as we have never heard for months. In truth, the…

Are there any honest Scottish Nationalists?

Are there any honest Scottish Nationalists?

In 2014, when the last once-in-a-generation Scottish independence referendum was held, the Scottish government under the then First Minister Alex Salmond published what it claimed was a comprehensive plan for how Scotland’s future as an independent nation would play out.  It was, in truth, a rather curious document, a mixture of high constitutional aspiration, a technical document glossing-over most of the difficulties, and a party manifesto, including a fair smattering of comically trivial measures which independence would unlock (“use Scotland’s…

Alba just get 3% in first Scottish poll since Salmond launched his new party

Alba just get 3% in first Scottish poll since Salmond launched his new party

Five weeks to go before the Scottish parliament election and we have the first Scotland polling since Alex Salmond made his announcement about setting up his new Alba party to compete with the SNP for the indy vote. The fieldwork from Survation all took place during a period when the former SNP leader and later Westminster MP was dominating the Scottish media. Alba is not standing in a constituency so the relevant polling is that for the regional lists when…

Alex Salmond looks set to do a lot better amongst Scottish men than women

Alex Salmond looks set to do a lot better amongst Scottish men than women

The latest YouGov Scotland poll that was published before the weekend gives a good indication of the challenge facing the ex-SNP leader and former Scottish First Minister as he attempts to make a comeback with his new Alba party. Amongst the men polled 17% were prepared to give him a favourable rating against 74% saying unfavourable. With the women his ratings were even worse with just 12% giving him a favourable rating against 79% saying unfavourable. To the question “From…

What does Salmond want and what will he achieve?

What does Salmond want and what will he achieve?

It’s difficult to see Alba doing anything other than damaging Sindy chances Not all politics is personal but it’s very hard to explain Alex Salmond’s return to the front line of Scottish politics in any other terms. He feels very wronged. Wronged by the actions of his former party and his former deputy and successor, whose behaviour towards him may or may not have been inappropriate depending on which report or inquiry you read; and wronged by the Scottish government…

Stopping the SNP juggernaut – what are the chances for Scotland’s opposition parties?

Stopping the SNP juggernaut – what are the chances for Scotland’s opposition parties?

Analysis of the most recent Ipsos Scotland poll With two months to go until the Holyrood elections, Ipsos MORI’s latest Scotland poll yet again finds the SNP ahead on voting intention – 52% of likely voters are minded to vote SNP for their constituency, and 47% say they will vote for them on their regional list. Both the Conservatives (on 23% constituency, 22% list) and Labour (15%/14%) continue to trail well behind. But as the well worn saying goes, a…

Is Sturgeon going to survive?

Is Sturgeon going to survive?

When the bookies start opening markets on your survival then you know that a political leader is in trouble. Ladbrokes now make it 7/4 that she will be out this year following the latest revelations over the Salmond affair. These odds have been getting tighter over the past week as one revelation has followed another. The timing for the First Minister could not be worse given we are just two month away from the Scottish parliament elections where Nicola will…
